Getty Images to use PicScout to help identify unautorized use

Getty Images has launched an agreement with PicScout utilizing their Image Tracker Service to investigate Internet use of photographs, starting April 11, 2005. As part of the agreement, Getty Images will provide all of its Rights Managed imagery on gettyimages.com (approximately 450,000) for PicScout to scan websites for unauthorized/unlicensed uses, using their sophisticated image recognition technology.

Getty Images launched this agreement following the successful results of the partnership between StockArtistsAlliance (SAA) and PicScout. For some time, we have been evaluating methods and technologies to make this process more efficient and effective. Utilizing PicScout's technology will further help Getty Images to protect our photographers' copyrights, which is critical to the industry and our photographers' success.

Over the course of the year, Getty Images will periodically provide PicScout with additional Rights Managed images as we supplement our collection. PicScout will provide Getty Images periodic match reports showing all uses they have found on websites, which Getty Images will then process to determine which are unauthorized/unlicensed uses.

Objectives of the agreement are:

  • To identify Internet infringements of Rights Managed images that are licensed through Getty Images.
  • To use an advanced technology to allow Getty Images to find infringements and recapture lost revenues for its photographers.
  • To increase the awareness of copyright registration and the necessity for tracking uses on an ongoing basis.
